This weekend marks International Tiger Day, a celebration of those big cats that are fighting for their lives. Wild tiger populations have dwindled more than 95 percent in the last century, with just a few thousand remaining. Slash-and-burn agriculture along with logging and human encroachment have hugely diminished the habitat—and therefore, the food—available to these predators. But poaching—for trophies and body parts used in Asian “medicine”—is thought to pose the greatest threat.

The Music Lives On
Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer-songwriter, died on Wednesday at the age of 56. O’Connor rose to fame on the strength of her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got and its lead single, a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” But controversy followed O’Connor, who became as well known for her activism as she was for her songs. It’s been a tough year so far for the music industry: Here are some of the luminaries we’ve lost—and the songs that made them famous.
Burt Bacharach
“Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)”
Jeff Beck
“Heart Full of Soul,” “Beck’s Bolero,” “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers”
Harry Belafonte
“Day-O (Banana Boat Song),” “Jamaica Farewell,” “Jump in the Line”
Tony Bennett
“Rags to Riches,” “Stranger in Paradise,” “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”
David Crosby
“Eight Miles High,” “Wooden Ships,” “Almost Cut My Hair”
Gordon Lightfoot
“If You Could Read My Mind,” “Early Morning Rain,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”
Huey “Piano” Smith
“Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” “Don’t You Just Know It,” “Sea Cruise”
Tina Turner
“Proud Mary” “River Deep, Mountain High,” “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
